Report of Comic Con 2001

Note: Since this report is a recollection of what happened back then, some things might have been forgotten, but alas if I remember anything or realize something is in error, I will update this!

After the fun blast at AX, I was looking even more forward to Comic Con; I would get to wear my costumes again, have more shopping time, and possibly meet cool new guests!

Aheh, well, in truth, there were no big-name Anime guests coming to Comic Con this year. QUITE disappointing, I wondered what else there would be for me to do.

So if you want to find out-continuing reading, or click the day of your preference.

-Thursday-   -Friday-   -Saturday-   -Sunday-

Our day started off on Thursday (we had planned to go all 4 days from last year); Sana-chan, Saphron and Mockystar accompanied me again. I was dressed as Sailor Jupiter and Sana-chan as Cardcaptor Sakura.

This day was pretty uneventful except for the fact I spent all my money in one day. -_-
I remember the last thing I bought for the day was that darned Cardcaptor Sakura clock (it’s still sitting on my shelf ^_^), and wondered why I wasn’t able to spread out my money for the rest of the days seeing as these four days would just be one big shopping spree.

I believe as a result we left early, more so that I could check the program to find out if indeed they were hiding any sort of anime guest from us; but alas know. It’s just too bad I’m not into American comics, or most popular movies, I probably would have found a panel to go to.

But regardless, I was sure something was going to happen the rest of the three days.

On Friday I was Seira and Sana-chan was Saint Tail. This day was another hang out day, granted I didn’t spend anything since I was out of money.

We discovered new con buddies however, AND the TokyoPop Bingo. That was the coolest game around! They were giving out anime and video game freebies, and I managed to win that sought after Final Fantasy IX soundtrack. Granted, I hadn’t played the game before hand, but the music made me more opt to going out and getting the game. XD

This game was sooooooo much fun that we kept coming back and playing, even though we didn’t win every time, but I seemed to have “winner’s” luck at this con as I was bagging up a lot of prizes. ^_^

Oh and as a side note to all the recent con buddies I met in 2003, this was the con where a lot of “inside” jokes have come from, especially between me, Sana-chan and DarkVision.

On Saturday, Sana-chan and I were dressed as the same thing from the previous day, however Saphron put on her “Mama” costume from Kodocha.

This day again was another “Tokyopop” day, and general hangout day. Unfortunately, Sana-chan and I didn’t have the chance to attend the Comic-Con masquerade, which we heard was really, REALLY funny from some of our friends. But what can you do? 0_o
After all, we strictly were into anime cosplay and weren’t really interested in seeing comic book characters on stage cuz we obviously wouldn’t have got the jokes.

But little did I know there were anime skits AND Star Wars. 0_0

Sunday I reverted back to Sailor Jupiter and Sana-chan as Cardcaptor Sakura. Once again this was mostly shopping day and Tokyopop day. Gotta love those FREE giveaways!

Oh yeah and the FUNNIEST thing happened: Dark Vision who was Tenchi for the entire con had on black face paint and for some reason, Sana-chan thought it was rubbing off onto her Clow wand. She was getting so mad at him until later on during the day, she realized it was coming from a bag she was carrying. We all had such a crack up over that-we all told her to apologize since he didn’t do anything and she did the best thing ever: dropped on hands and knees and bowed before him. (The picture is in the gallery; check it out under Sunday) She regrets doing that…but it was still rather funny. ^_^

It might have seemed that this year’s Comic Con wasn’t as eventful, but it was still fun. In my mind, I figured that if ANY anime guests came at last minute, they would have a schedule posted under “schedule changes.” I did myself the favor and checked it here and there during the con, but to no avail.

And that was fine…I mean…Anime Expo caters to the Anime audience and this was the first Comic Con where I realized it’s not JUST about the anime.

I figured if this was going to be the trend from now on at Comic Con, then not to expect much-go there for cosplay and shopping. Even then, cosplay is a rarity at Comic Con. In comparison to Anime Expo, normal dressed up people outnumber the cosplayers at Comic Con.

So having left the con with a fun experience, I can’t say I had more fun at Comic Con than I did at AX for that year. Sana-chan will tell you different, but everybody has different experiences; I was just glad to still be able to go.

Of course, with my newfound interest in Lord of the Rings, little did I know how Comic Con would be redefined for me the following year…
